1989 Gibson Les Paul Standard

1989 Gibson Les Paul Standard

Made in October 1989 in the Nashville plant comes this Gibson USA Les Paul Standard

I never thought I’d sell this guitar. I’ve owned it nearly 30 years. I’ve pretty much upgraded everything on the guitar over that time to make it one of the best sounding Les Paul’s I’ve had the pleasure to own and play…and I’ve had quite a few including numerous Custom Shop models).

I purchased this Les Paul from a well know Japanese guitar trader in the 90’s, mainly because it had a subtle flame top and the colour was slightly different than the usual standard cherry or tobacco sunbursts you see everywhere. You don’t see this finish very often and from memory I recollect the seller said it was Antique Sunburst…but I’m not 100% on that. It’s looks to me similar to be a Heritage or Antique Cherry. The only recent colour that I’ve seen that looks close was a Murphy Lab hand painted 59. (I’m not suggesting this is a Murphy Lab or a 59 reissue, just the colour is pretty much the same)

It was a good guitar to start with but we all like to tweak yes? It’s a sickness…😆

Over the years it has had many upgrades…the tuners replaced with Grover Tulip profile, a new bone nut, jumbo frets installed, new quality pots, Speed knobs , Seymour Duncan lower output Seth Lover pickups, 50’s wiring, vintage paper in oil Caps, a Callaham Stainless steel ABR bridge, Tone Pro’s Studs and Callaham stainless steel tailpiece. I’ve spent a lot of time and money on this guitar to make it into the best sounding and playing guitar I could possibly make it.

Years ago I removed the metal covers on the Seth Lover pickups just to see what difference it would make to the tone and I thought it sounded better, so I left them off. The pickups sound great either clean or overdriven and the guitar cleans up nicely with the volume knob. I hate how some Les Pauls turn to mud or lose tone when you turn down, or when you go to the neck pickup. This one sounds nice at any volume, clean or dirty in any of the pickup selector positions. The middle position gives that “telecaster on steroids” sound that is only found on good sounding Les Pauls.

The pictures tell the story. It’s not been a case queen, its seen a lot of play time and done a lot of gigs, but is also in great condition for a 34 year old guitar. The back of the neck has had the finish worn back a bit to a smoother matte finish through natural play wear…because it’s been played a lot. The sign of a good guitar. Some paint wear on the back of the top bout area but not a lot of buckle rash or other chips or dents on this one. It’s been well looked after. No weight relief, no neck breaks, cracks or headstock repairs here. It’s solid and quite simply a great sounding and looking Les Paul Standard. The flamed top is subtle but beautiful.

Just been setup and the intonation done.

It comes with the original Brown Gibson hard case it came in which is also in good condition.

I have more expensive guitars but I’ll be sorry to see this one go…
