Yamaha SA2000S

Yamaha SA2000S

This early 80’s Yamaha SA-2000S is a Gibson ES335 killer and one of the best 335 style guitars ever made, by any brand EVER.

The last letter ‘S’ in SA-2000S stands for “Solid” and refers to its carved solid spruce top, whereas the SA-2000 (without the S) had a pressed multi ply top of birch & maple.

You know when you pick a guitar up and it just feels right, well this is one of those. I have gigged a few times with this and my other SA2000 and they rarely go out of tune which is amazing from a player’s point of view. It is a thoroughly wonderful experience playing this classic beauty especially in this vintage Cherry, it just oozes quality.

The SA-2500 was the only Yamaha semi-acoustic body that was more expensive than the SA-2000S and extremely hard to find. Occasionally you’ll see a few SA 2000 models (with the laminated top) listed for sale (great guitars in their own right), but very rarely do you find a SA 2000S available on the market, mainly because they are simply such great instruments and nobody wants to sell them, and there were a lot less of them built in the first place.

Another feature which stood the SA 2000S model apart from its lesser siblings was the coil split function applied to both humbucking pickups via the tone controls – a great guitar made even more versatile. And all of the sounds are good. Often a coil split results in simply a weaker sounding pickup, but these sound good in any combination, from jangly & sparkly to fat and nasty – just dial it in. They also featured a solid maple block running down the centre of the guitar that the pickups are mounted onto to reduce the feedback that other semi-acoustics suffered from.

This one was manufactured in Japan. It weighs in at approx 8lbs 7ozs old or approx 3.75Kg. The neck is what I would describe as similar to a 57 or 58 Les Paul, full and on the chunky side.

There is a widely held view that the top Japanese makers were building better instruments in the late 70s & early 80s than their US counterparts. And this guitar certainly adds to that legend. There is a reason why a lot of the top session players were using these guitars around that time.

This one is a great player, with sound to match, featuring high quality materials and fine workmanship. The pickups are impressive – ranging from very airy and articulate to fat, dark and gritty with some judicious dialling.

This SA2000s is in great shape being 40 years old. There is some tarnishing of the gold plating which is probably to be expected, and there’s a few light scratches on the body rear and some pick wear on the guard. But this guitar is still certainly in fine condition for a 40 year old instrument. There are no structural concerns or any cosmetic blemishes of note.

The medium jumbo frets are original and are in superb shape – plenty of life left as there is no wear. The ebony fingerboard is a classy touch, and the neck is super comfortable & plays beautifully.

This is a fabulous, unique sounding, semi-acoustic, solid top thinline that can stand toe to toe with any brand of that style and come out a winner every time.

Comes in a hard shell case in fair condition.
